Mental Skills Training

Mental toughness is a skill athletes must have in order to be successful. Athletes who underperform or choke under pressure will find it hard to take their game to the next level.

While some athletes may already know they need mental toughness, they may not be aware that, like physical training, their mental game can be developed with the right guidance and expertise.

Multisport Psychological Consultants helps clients train their mental abilities and develop a strong mental game, no matter what their sport. We provide individual consultation for athletes interested in improving and strengthening their mental game, as well as consultation for teams, coaches and parents of athletes.

We specialize in providing clients with a unique, customized approach to helping them reach their specific performance and personal goals.

Dr. Strickland assists athletes in learning important mental skills, such as visualization, self-awareness skills, how to control negative thinking and how to set short- and long-term goals. He works with clients to develop performance routines to help prepare the mind for competition.

Multisport uses state-of-the-art tools to identify the mental skill needs of our clients and develop a personalized approach to help them overcome mental barriers that stand in the way of reaching their potential.

Athletes can’t expect their bodies to perform well without the proper training, and the same goes for the mind. We equip our clients with the tools they need to rise to the occasion and achieve the success they never thought possible.

Psychological Evaluations

The psychological health and mental strength of an organization’s players can often make or break the team’s success. Whether an organization is looking to draft the perfect fit for the team’s culture or a player has need of a mental health evaluation, we can help.

Multisport Psychological Consultants evaluates players based on parameters like learning aptitude, IQ, ADD/ADHD, personality characteristics, grit, etc. We can also identify any mental health issues that may stand in the way of performance goals and devise an effective, tailored approach to treatment.

Pre-Draft Testing

Dr. Strickland works with drafting or scouting departments to help organizations find the right athlete. Based upon the organization’s specific needs and concerns, Dr. Strickland will design a psychological profile of the kind of athlete the team is hoping to draft.

He also evaluates draft picks to determine if there are underlying conditions that may prevent or hinder a player from achieving success. This ensures that the client drafts players that will ultimately contribute to the success and achievement of the entire team.

Post-Draft Testing

If a player is underperforming, facing personal challenges, or suffering from a suspected condition, a mental health evaluation is an important step to ensure the player’s health, performance and overall well-being.

Dr. Strickland and his network of colleagues conduct psychological evaluations to understand the athlete’s mental awareness and recommend treatment options, if needed.

Performance Physiology Training

Performance physiology training is a tool used to enhance performance and improve awareness of the mind-body connection. Through physiology training, Dr. Strickland shows clients how to ‘train their brains,’ helping them improve performance as their brain learns to respond to situations appropriately.

Multisport employs three kinds of performance physiology training:

Biofeedback focuses on the client’s mind-body connection. During this training, Dr. Strickland evaluates mind-body interactions through physiological measurements, such as heart rate, breathing, skin temperature, sweat gland activity, muscle tension and brain wave activity. “Biofeedback” is the process of feeding this information back to the client to help them learn how to make voluntary changes in those biological functions, changes that help them improve their game.

Neurofeedback is another powerful tool used by Dr. Strickland to help clients develop their social and emotional brains. Through visual and auditory feedback, we measure the client’s brainwave activity and gently guide the brain to an optimal state of functioning. Over time, the brain gradually learns to operate in this ideal state and will respond favorably to different situations and environments.

Reaction time training uses Biofeedback and/or Neurofeedback to improve reaction time during physical activity. By improving overall reaction time and monitoring the client’s mind-body connection, we can help them reach their specific performance goals. Using one or more of the above methods, we can objectively measure how an athlete reacts to pressure and then specifically train the mind to overcome those challenges.

Mental Health Evaluations

Mental health issues are often hard to spot from the outside; like a duck floating on the water, an athlete may appear cool and calm on the surface, but underneath he or she is paddling furiously to stay afloat. Considering the growing rates of mental health conditions in the general population, it’s no surprise that athletes also struggle with mental health challenges.

Mental health issues can impact an athlete’s performance and certainly can have a detrimental effect on their life and well being. It is important that these issues are diagnosed and evaluated by a trained and licensed professional, as in most cases they will not go away on their own.

As a Licensed Psychologist, Dr. Strickland is trained in the latest empirically validated treatment methods to address various mental health issues.

At the first appointment, Dr. Strickland will ask about the client’s health history, family history and symptoms, with the goal of understanding the issue and coming to a diagnosis. By the end of the first session, the client is given a personalized treatment plan and an estimate of how long therapy will take until they start seeing improvement.

Don’t let your mental health needs impact the performance of you or your loved one. Call Dr. Strickland to discuss how he can help.

Trauma/Injury Consultations

A catastrophic injury is a serious blow to an athlete’s physical performance, but it can cause even more damage to their mental game. In many cases, an athlete may return to full health but is still underperforming or even afraid to reenter the game.

When athletes experience a serious injury or traumatic event, fear and anxiety can cause them to hesitate to reengage in the game. And while a rehabilitation program can get an athlete physically back on track, it doesn’t do much to address the mental side of the trauma.

Dr. Strickland helps athletes recover mentally from an injury or trauma so that they can return to their pre-injury performance level. He is trained in specific and effective methods to treat the athlete’s trauma response and help them learn skills to move past the injury.

A recoverable injury shouldn’t have to end your career; call Dr. Strickland to help you get back in your game.
